September 1, 2014 Dear Parents/Guardians:
We regret to inform you that following weekend exploratory talks with Vince Ready, the BC Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) and the BC Public School Employers’ Association (BCPSEA) were unable to conclude a negotiated agreement. While we remain optimistic that this will occur in the near future, our schools will not open to commence the school year on Tuesday, September 2nd. We anticipate that teachers will not report to work, and that our schools will be behind picket lines. This is disappointing news for our staff, and especially our students and families.
All Chilliwack schools will be closed for instruction tomorrow. School district buses will not operate. Although principals and vice-principals will be in their schools, they are unable to provide students with instruction or supervision. Therefore, we request that families make alternate arrangements for their children as necessary. Daycares on school district sites will continue to remain open.
We recognize the pressure that this situation puts on families. Nevertheless, we will remain optimistic that we will soon be welcoming our students and staff into their schools. We have been informed that mediator Vince Ready will continue to monitor the situation and will be talking with both parties on a daily basis.
We encourage parents to check our website (www.sd33.bc.ca) and follow the local media for any changes over the next number of days. Parents can also check the BC government website information for parents regarding Teacher bargaining updates and information: http://bcparentinfo.ca/latest-news/ for any new developments.
Thank you for your continued understanding.
Evelyn Novak Superintendent of Schools
